CLIMATE OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR
SPRING SEASON (MARCH – MID MAY)
Temperature start rising and gradually snow starts melting.
Day temperature rise above 10o
Maximum rainfall caused by western disturbances.
From April, the temperature rises abruptly and in May it comes up to 25
SUMMER SEASON (MID MAY – MID SEPTEMBER)
Temperature goes up and days become very hot and humid.
July is the hottest month (Maximum temperature = 37o Celsius)
AUTUMN SEASON (MID-SEPTEMBER – OCTOBER)
It is a static season as there are minimum weather disturbances.
Little rainfall and temperature falls gradually.

Storing of food and fuel for winter months.
WINTER SEASON (NOVEMBER – FEBRUARY)
Coldest season of the year.
Temperature begins to fall and reaches to minimum in January.
January is the coldest month which is locally known as period of Chile-Kalan (40 days of intense cold)
Chile-Kalan (21 December – 31 January)
Average snowfall = 120 cm.
Maximum snowfall occurs in the month of January i.e. about 42% of the total snowfall.
In winter Precipitation (rainfall) mainly caused by Westerly Disturbances (i.e. Temperate Cyclones originating from Mediterranean Sea). The rainfall generated by these cyclones is fairly widespread locally known as Alamgir.
Maximum snowfall occurs in South Kashmir (Doru) and North Kashmir
Sunshine is low and relative humidity remains about 90%.
The greater calamity in the winter is the occurrence of Kot-Kushu (frost) which seems to freeze the damp moisture of the air and destroys trees and even congeals eggs.
In exceptional years of severe cold, e.g., the last week of December 1985, 1986, 1987, 1988 and 1994 in Srinagar, the temperature went below -15°C. Consequently, most of the lakes of the valley floor (Dal, Wular, Anchar, Manasbal) were frozen and became the playgrounds for the adventurous children and sportsmen of Srinagar and its environs.
